This is the appropriate thread to post papers on ancient language contacts, including loanwords as well as any proposed phonetic or morphosyntactic influence. Of particular interest are contacts among Indo-European and Uralic languages (early stages), agricultural substrata, and border contacts of both dialects that might help define their ancestral location.
Recent papers on the subject include
Open access paper The deviant typological profile of the Tocharian branch of Indo-European may be due to Uralic substrate influence by Peyrot, Indo-European Linguistics (2019). This is my take on the blog: Samoyedic shows Yeniseic substrate; both influenced Tocharian.
Open access PhD thesis Indo-Iranian borrowings in Uralic: Critical overview of sound substitutions and distribution criterion, by Sampsa Holopainen, University of Helsinki (2019), under the supervision of Forsberg, Saarikivi, and Kallio. This is my summary: Intense but irregular NWIE and Indo-Iranian contacts show Uralic disintegrated in the West.
In my post Early Uralic – Indo-European contacts within Europe I discussed:
- Uralic–(Italo-)Celtic, with an emphasis on the recent Contacts between Finnic and Celtic? by Merlijn de Smit (2019)
- Germanic / Balto-Slavic – Uralic contacts.
- Potential Uralic borrowings in Indo-Iranian.
